Heads or Tails (2025)

for Saxophone Octet

Heads or Tails divides the saxophone octet into two equal quartets and pits them against each other. They comment on, talk over, and overtake each other, switching rapidly and suddenly between different ensembles and different musics. Eventually the two ensembles and the two musics are combined, their differences reconciled.

Heads or Tails was completed in January of 2025. It is dedicated to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Saxophone Studio, which premiered the work on April 5, 2025 at the 2025 Region 2 Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance at California State University, Fullerton.
