Los Angeles-based composer and performer Thacher Schreiber’s music ranges from romantic to acerbic, and everywhere in between. A musician since the age of eight, his interests lie in maintaining a diverse portfolio, from works for chamber ensembles and solo instruments to song cycles and symphonic works. He is currently studying composition with Richard Danielpour, Ian Krouse, David Lefkowitz, and Kay Rhie at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
Thacher began absorbing the fundamentals of composition through making arrangements. As an undergraduate, he threw himself into a plethora of analysis, and orchestrations classes with such composers as Anthony Constantino, Richard Danielpour, Dwayne Milburn, and Kay Rhie.
Thacher’s works include orchestral showpieces such as Foils and Dances and Dreamscapes, as well as works such as Moon Song for solo oboe and Affections for solo viola. An avid chamber musician himself, Thacher is most at home writing for chamber ensembles, yielding such works as Ballet for reed quintet, Chamber Music for tenor and Pierrot ensemble, Heads or Tails for saxophone octet (commissioned by the UCLA Saxophone Studio), and Passacaglia and Fugue, which was premiered by Quatuor Diotima in 2024.
In addition to his work in composition, Thacher is also an accomplished performer, and studied with Dr. Jonathan Davis and Ryan Roberts at UCLA and The New School, respectively. Upcoming engagements include performances with the Civic Orchestra of Los Angeles, the California Young Artists’ Symphony, and performances with LA-based reed quintet Fivemind Reeds, of which he is a founding member.
